Time to head back to the city. We packed up early for the long drive southeast to Edinburgh, this time through gorgeous Glen Coe. We passed the British Isles' highest peak, Ben Nevis (4,408 ft) along the way. (I didn't get a picture.) When you consider that most of Scotland sits at sea level, that's quite a dramatic height.

Glen Coe: another area of Scotland we didn't have time to explore. If we ever come back, Glen Coe would top our list. These pictures don't do justice to the grandeur. The Highlands feel so pure and untouched, yet also redolent with history. We're used to the show-offy Rocky Mountains, but even though the mountains were smaller in Scotland there was something so wild and ancient about them, with their green mossy coats. Between the mountains and all the water--the waterfalls, the sea, the rivers and glimmering lochs--the Highlands are a magical place indeed.
