Father's Day

The other day, I overheard a father yelling at his son. It was a bully's yell, kind of scary and shaming. I was really startled. In a flash I realized something I'd never thought about before. I have never been yelled at like that in my life. And I have never heard Daniel raise his voice to our children that way either.

Sure, my Dad got mad (very rarely). Sure, Daniel gets mad (very rarely). But never have I been close to a man who used his strength to frighten or belittle others. What a gift. And one that I have taken for granted.

Looking back, I feel amazed at how blessed I have been. I have a kind, affectionate, wise, God-loving, and faithful Dad who has loved me unconditionally every day of my life. I have a husband who has done the same every day of our marriage.

And now I get to watch Daniel do this for our own children, and I know he also builds on the godly legacy of his own father.

Daniel is truly a wonderful Daddy. Patient, firm, wise, and fun. He encourages our boys to be smart but also adventurous. What better place to test themselves and to be close to God than in nature?

For Father's Day, we headed out to Clear Creek Canyon for a picnic.

First stop: the very cute town of Golden, which we never go to for some reason. But it really is adorable. We picked up sandwiches at what is now our favorite new lunch place, D'Deli. The long line was worth every second. Yum!

The run-off made the creek way too rough for wading but they just HAD to dip their feet in the shallows.

All the wildflowers and cacti were in full bloom. I have never seen the foothills so green. Must be all the torrential rain we've been getting. SO beautiful.

A holiday isn't a holiday without a big old cake. This time, one of Daniel's faves: double chocolate!

Happy Father's Day to all the wonderful fathers in our family!
