music

For my birthday, we drove up to Boulder to hear my favorite band, The Wailin' Jennys.

Here we are, all dolled up. This out-of-focus photo is about as good as it gets when you hand your camera to the babysitter you just met. Doesn't Daniel look handsome in his boots? Makes me remember how my heart would flutter every time I spotted him striding around Eastern in his maroon hiking boots.

The Wailin' Jennys were amazing, even better live than on their albums, if that's possible. I love how each band member has her own distinctive songwriting and musical style (jazz, folk, Celtic, alt pop). They each play multiple instruments and harmonize like nobody's business. Plus they write great songs. Here's one of my favorites from their newest album. It's called "You Are Here."

And here's one of my favorite covers they've done. Love the viola part!

Since the concert, I've been waking up every morning singing their arrangement of "Light of a Clear Blue Morning."  The words feel just about right these days. What is it about music? I need more of it in my life. The kids just started piano lessons and that's got me motivated to dust off my old music books.
