halloween

In case you didn't notice, people really get into Halloween these days. Or maybe they always did, but I can't say for sure, since I only went once as a child--in a plastic Snow White get-up. That was a special Halloween. Most years we turned off our porch light and went off to church for the Harvest Party, where we would play pass the orange, bob apples and eat caramel apples with our friends. The big question every year? Which of the four or five female Bible characters can I dress up as this time? I think I was Esther every single year. She had the best clothes, a.k.a. a gorgeous peacock-blue silk robe of my Mom's. When it doubt, just find a robe.

Fast forward a couple of years, and here we are with our own kids clamoring for Halloween. In our fun neighborhood packed with kids, and at their age, it tends to be a sweet and simple holiday. We emphasize that, rather than the scary parts, and so far it's working.
