first day of first grade

Today our sweet Jack started 1st grade in Denver Language School's Mandarin Chinese program. He was very brave his first morning but he couldn't help crying at drop-off. There were so many kids and parents, plus a new school and new teachers (and 100% Chinese immersion!). It was all just a tad overwhelming.

Isn't he handsome? Check out that monstrous bag of school supplies!

But he came home happy and full of stories about all the things he enjoyed, which makes Daniel and me feel so much better. Top of his list so far?
  1. the "cafe" where he discovered that by "forgetting" his lunch box he can order food (DLS is one of Denver's from-scratch cafeterias, which of course makes me happy),
  2. art class,
  3. a friend he recognized from church,
  4. biking to school,
  5. speaking Chinese.
He and Owen like to "speak Chinese" to each other. If I try to say something, they promptly inform me, "No, Mom, that's not how you say it." Forgive me for finding it hard to believe these children are fluent after two weeks of summer camp. Hilarious.

Off we go on the immersion adventure!

Owen misses his Jackie but he is happy to have Mommy all to himself until he starts kindergarten on Sept. 4th!
